The Best Self-Driving Cars

This past week, Google tested out their first Self Driving Car. The vehicle used in testing is a Toyota Prius, utilized by Google Corp in many of their Street View drives. The idea of a self-driven vehicle combines state of the art sensors around the car, and a link up with Google Maps to help navigate. Of course, being in the preliminary testing phase, Google is going to have some hiccups:

"The Prius - recognizable as a Google self-driving prototype from the roof equipment that's smaller than a typical Google Streetview image collector - appears to have rear-ended another Prius."1

It's not perfect, but at least they are giving it a try. Self-driving cars were once something you only saw on TV and film. And this got us wondering - what are some of the best driverless vehicles in pop culture?

KITT - The true star of Knight Rider (no disrespect to The Hoff) was originally a 1982 Trans Am, capable of being driven by a human, or by itself. The A.I. (artificial intelligence) allowed for KITT (short for Knight Industries Two Thousand) to propel itself at hundreds of mile per hour without anyone behind the wheel.

Herbie the Love Bug - This classic kids series of films from the 60's featured a Volkswagen Beetle that wanted to be a NASCAR or Rally Car champion (depending on which film you were watching). Much like KITT, Herbie let humans drive him, but could also get around all by himself. We were never really sure if Herbie was a haunted vehicle, and speaking of possessed cars?

Christine - The villain from Stephen King's classic horror novel and film. The 1958 Plymouth Fury was out to take revenge on all those that stood in her way. Possessed by a demon, the car was able to drive itself and also regenerate.

Batmobile - Batman's car has gone through hundreds of variations between comic books, movies, TV and cartoons. Although the Batmobile needs to be pre-programmed by Bruce Wayne, the vehicle is able to drive itself to help out The Dark Knight at a time of need.

We don't have any self-driving cars at Truckmasters in Phoenix, AZ, but we do have an excellent line-up of quality pre-owned vehicles.
